In July 2021, Australia Awards alumni from Fiji and Tuvalu attended an emerging leaders’ webinar, facilitated by international mentoring expert Dr Lesley Petersen.
The webinar, coordinated by the Papua New Guinea Australia Awards Association (PNGAAA), provided a great opportunity for emerging Australia Awards alumni leaders from across the region to strengthen their networks and focus on driving positive change through effective leadership.
The webinar covered mentoring, coaching and training. Alumni explored the core principles that drive their leadership approaches to determine their authentic leadership styles.
Jiupili Simmons, who completed a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language from Western Sydney University, was one of the 15 participating alumni from Fiji and Tuvalu. When asked what she enjoyed most about the webinar, Jiupili stated “the webinar was relevant and informative, and it aroused discussions with participants from different professional backgrounds across nations in Fiji, Tuvalu, PNG, Nauru, NZ and Australia. It was thought-provoking, interesting and inculcated shared knowledge. The knowledge gained from this training has boosted my confidence to take up leadership opportunities, as it erased my self-doubts. It has also given me a benchmark to learn from or weigh my skills with”.
Fiji & Tuvalu alumni appreciated the invitation and collaboration shown by our colleagues in PNG in joining this event. We look forward to more regional opportunities to network and drive change!
